The Fairfield girls’ track and field team settled for third place in the Southeast Conference meet Tuesday, and Fairfield head coach Ron Hunerdosse wasn’t about to sugarcoat the reasons why.

“We got beat by two teams that are just better than us,” Fairfield head coach Ron Hunerdosse said, referring to Mount Pleasant and Washington. “Our kids ran hard, but whether we were on fresh legs or tired legs, we were going to have trouble beating either of those teams.”

The Trojans ended up with a 79-point total, finishing behind champion Mount Pleasant (133) and runner-up Washington (117) just one day removed from the Brookhart-Crew Relays. Fort Madison was fourth and Keokuk finished fifth.

The Trojans still ended up with four victories, including two wins from their defending state champion Sydney Howard.

Howard, still on a high from a terrific Brookhart-Crew Relays, put together dominant wins in the open-100 (12.67) and 200 (26.28), but she wasn’t the only Trojan senior to successfully defend a title.

Sidney Baumann tacked on her second straight conference title in the discus and threw a new personal record in the process, reaching 123-feet, 7-inches to win by more than 17 feet. Madison Roberts, a sophomore, placed third in the event at 102 feet.

“Baumann winning is not a surprise, but Baumann throwing 123 feet is ... a long awaited throw,” said Hunerdosse. “And the surprise of the night was Roberts, who easily had her best throw. And good for her. Well deserved.”

The Trojans also received a two-second win in the distance medley. Freshmen twins Emma Kuehl and Gabrielle Kuehl led off the relay, and upperclassmen Marisa Repp and Jessica Lamb secured the victory in 4:32.

“The Kuehls have been making huge strides as short sprinters for us. I think that’s real cool for those girls to be a part of a ... conference championship, and they earned their spot to do that,” Hunerdosse said.

Washington edged the Trojans in the 4x100, where McKenzie McClure, Repp, Alexis Ring and Howard finished second in 52.41 seconds. Despite getting the baton well behind Washington, Howard nearly caught up from the anchor spot to finish five-hundredths of a second shy of the win.

“I think our sprinters had some tight legs, and [Washington] didn’t beat us by enough that come Thursday night I’m going to be afraid of them,” said Hunerdosse. “I look forward to a third meeting with them, and if we have good handoffs I guarantee we’ll beat them next Thursday.”

McClure, Erin Thompson, Cierra Bielinski and Howard also placed second in the 4x200 (1:52.02).

Repp grabbed a handful of points in individual events, placing second in both the high jump (5’) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:10.70). Taylor Ferrel, Hannah Sobaski, Sesali Martin and Abby Melcher finished second in the 4x800 (10:39).

The state-qualifying meet is scheduled next Thursday in Mount Pleasant.
