SEISC Shootout: Clubb leads Pekin past Comet boys

Feb 12, 2013

PACKWOOD — Last time Pekin and Cardinal met, on Dec. 13, 2012, the result was a game for the ages. In the meeting, the teams battled through six periods and combined to score 187 points as the Panther boys ultimately prevailed 97-90.

In the two teams’ Southeast Iowa Super Conference shootout meeting Friday, however, the excitement expected from a double-overtime rematch was kept to a minimum. Pekin made sure of that.

The Panthers scored 28 points in the second quarter Friday to break a 12-all tie and run away with a 69-40 victory. Pekin also out-scored Cardinal 29-21 in the second half.

Junior Petie Clubb led the Panthers with 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting, including two 3s. Teammates Seth Jensen and Cade Millikin scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Pekin’s Brody Long scored nine points and hauled in nine rebounds. Jared Bond and Graham Wittrock added seven points each, and Millikin also dished out a game-high seven assists.

The Panthers, who improved to 13-8 overall with the win, shot 29-for-56 from the field as a team. They also won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding the Comets 35-21 in the rivalry rematch.

Senior Jonathan Pedersen paced the Comets with 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting. Senior Dakota Showman scored 11 and nabbed three steals, while sophomore Kaleb Durflinger tallied six points and 10 boards. Brandon Potts finished with five points and three blocks, and Charlie Rachford had five points and two blocked shots.
