Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident at 6:37 a.m. Sunday on Business Highway 34, three-tenths of a mile east of Exit 210. Melina M. Ramos Afaro of Ottumwa, was driving a 1998 Toyota Corolla east on Business Highway 34. She said she lost control due to icy road conditions. Lauren Elizabeth Kellett, of Florissant, Mo., was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Colbalt west on Business Highway 34. She said she saw the Toyota loosing control and saw it cross the centerline. Kellett tried to take evasive action, lost control on the icy road, and slide sideways, colliding broadside with the Toyota. After impact, the Chevrolet spun around and entered the south ditch. The Toyota sustained an estimated $2,500 in damages. The Chevrolet sustained an estimated $11,000 in damages. The accident report said personal injuries were involved, but no details were given.
Alexander Dale Coleman of Hedrick was driving a 2003 Honda Accord south on Brookville Road following a vehicle driven by a friend. Coleman said his vision became obscured due to dust and he lost control six-tenths of a mile northwest of Cedar Avenue in Abingdon, and entered the ditch to the left. Coleman was cited for failure to maintain control. His Honda sustained an estimated $2,000 in damages.
