Shooting lane at Turkey Run Wildlife closed
The shooting lane at Turkey Run Wildlife Area is officially closed.
Signs are posted and the earth berm constructed four years ago has been removed. Many issues have contributed to the closing. The most significant of these issues was excessive litter and target debris. Insurance and liability concerns also played a role.
The Jefferson County Conservation Board received word from an Iowa Community Assurance Pool loss control insurance agent if the shooting area was to remain open, it had to be completely enclosed by a fence and gated. The board felt the shooting area was becoming a detriment to the wildlife area and was conflicting with the primary purpose of the area, which is nature appreciation and public hunting.
