Solid defense carries Pekin to 4-2 victory
PACKWOOD — Pekin first-year baseball coach Pie Reighard said his team had its “best defense to date” in a 4-2 victory over conference foe Highland Monday in Packwood.
Behind starting pitcher Petie Clubb, the Pekin defense had no errors and Graham Wittrock and Clubb each totaled five putouts. Kolby Allsup added two.
“We had a lot of putouts. We made some nice plays in the field and just played good, solid defense,” said Reighard.
Clubb went all seven innings for the win, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out five Huskies.
The Panthers also hit the ball with a little more authority, getting on the scoreboard first with a pair of runs plated in the bottom of the third. Clubb got on base via error and Jaydan Nicholson scored Clubb on a double for the first run of the game. Cade Millikin later hit a double to score Cole Reighard.
In the fourth inning, Reighard scored again — this time on a Graham Wittrock double — to hand Pekin a 3-0 lead. Highland cut the deficit to one with two runs in the fifth, but Pekin added on an insurance run in the sixth.
“For the most part, we just did a good job putting the ball in play. Highland only had six strikeouts, and when you put the ball in play it will eventually work out for you,” the first-year coach said.
Wittrock paced the eight-hit attack with three hits, including two doubles. Nicholson, Millikin, Reighard, Nazereth Rambo and Thomas Slaney collected one hit apiece for Pekin.
Pekin (3-5, 3-3 SEISC North) also lost a six-inning game to Louisa-Muscatine on Tuesday. Zach Sloan was the losing pitcher as Pekin fell 13-3. Wittrock knocked in two runs and legged out a double, and Reighard and Kirk Talley had one base knock each.
The Panthers conclude the week with a pair of home games. They host Cardinal Thursday and Mediapolis on Friday.
