Southeast Iowa Blues Society hosting concert Tuesday
The Southeast Iowa Blues Society welcomes Grammy nominee, two-time blues award winner and harp master Mark Hummel and the Golden State Lone Star Blues Revue at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center’s Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts.
Led by Hummel, vocalist and harmonica player, this band is an all-star, cross-country melding of musicians from California to Texas and features bassist R.W. Grigsby, guitarist Mike Keller formally of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, guitarist Anson Funderburgh, band leader of the Rockets, and famed Austin drummer Wes Starr.
Hummel’s Blues Award nominated release, “The Hustle Is Really On,” features the Golden State Lone Star Blues Revue. Besides producing and playing on Blind Pig’s “Remembering Little Walter” with Charlie Musselwhite, Billy Boy Arnold, Sugar Ray Norcia, James Harman, Little Charlie Baty, Nathan James, June Core & RW Grigsby, the CD was nominated for a Grammy Award and won Best Blues Album & Best Traditional Blues Album of the year at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis, Tennessee.
Hummel picked up a harmonica in 1970 and has gone on to become one of the premier blues harmonica players of his generation. A true Blues Survivor, he has crafted his own trademark harmonica sound – a subtle combination of tone, phrasing and attack combined with a strong sense of swing. Since 1984, Hummel has been constantly touring and makes appearances at the major blues festivals, he’s firmly established his solid reputation around the U.S. and Europe.
The Golden State Lone Star Blues Revue is presented by the Southeast Iowa Blues Society. Society members can receive discounted tickets and are invited to a preshow party at 6:30 p.m. Members should bring their membership card and a guest. Complimentary appetizers and beverages will be served, plus, Hummel will play a couple of bars.
