SPORTS BRIEFS: JV, freshmen football, freshmen volleyball
The Fairfield freshmen football team lost to Keokuk 48-8 Friday.
“We give up a few too many big plays early in games and make it an uphill battle from there,” freshmen coach Brad Repp said. “But the kids never quit.”
Brandon Smithburg ran the ball 20 times and racked up 130 yards. Trenton Hanen rushed for 65 yards.
Hanen led the team in tackles with eight. Josh Oby and Simon Spalla each had five tackles. Smithburg recorded four tackles of his own.
The freshmen team played Davis County on Sept. 6 and lost 32-0. Smithburg and Logan Angstead led the team in tackles with six.
On Sept. 13 they played Washington and lost 56-0.
“We weren’t able to get any offense going consistently and Washington had a very good team,” Repp said.
Hanen made nine tackles and Osby had five. Smithburg led the team in rushing with 42 yards on the ground.
The freshmen team plays at 5 p.m. Friday at Williamsburg.
The Fairfield JV football team beat Keokuk 27-18 Monday.
Dakota Nye rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Cameron Baumann threw a touchdown pass and also caught a touchdown. Alex Crile caught Baumann’s touchdown pass, which was 33 yards.
Bryce Lunsford led the team in tackles with 8.5. Nye followed closely behind him with seven.
The Fairfield freshmen volleyball team played at a tournament Monday in Centerville.
The Trojans lost to Centerville 15-21, 17-21. The Trojans followed up their loss by tying Davis County 21-14, 13-21, and by beating Kirksville 21-5, 21-14.
Kaylee Watson was 25-25 serving with six aces. Paige Buch was 25-28 serving with five kills.
Taylor Marley served 10 straight points during the first set against Kirksville. Marley wound up going 12-15 serving with three aces.
Shelby Heston led the team in kills with 15. Haley Beard had eight kills and Buch had five. Watson led the team in assists with 22. Heston recorded four blocks.
