Fairfield JV boys defeated by Pella
The Fairfield JV baseball team lost 10-3 Wednesday at Pella.
Alex Crile and Ryan Meyer both went 1-1 at the plate and scored a run. Shay McCabe pitched two innings in which he gave up one walk, one hit and got one strikeout.
Van Buren wins big on diamond
The no. 3 ranked Van Buren High School baseball team won huge for the second game in a row, toppling Harmony 18-1 Thursday in Keosauqua.
The Warriors scored 10 runs in the first inning, and the game wound up only lasting four innings total. Braxton Bainbridge pitched the entire game, giving up only four hits and striking out eight batters.
Garrett Saunders hit a home run for the second straight game. He finished the night 2-3, with four RBI and two stolen bases. Will Mertens went 1-2, walked twice and wound up scoring four runs. Robert Barker and Robby Laughlin each smacked two hits.
Van Buren (2-0) hosts New London tonight and will play in the Davis County tournament Saturday.
Pekin softball loses another in extras
The Pekin High School softball team lost its home opener against Wapello 7-6 in eight innings Thursday.
Bridget Fritchen led Pekin offensively by going 2-4 with two home runs and three RBI. Nikole Arendt also had two hits. Tiana Slaney and Sloan Reighard each had a hit and a RBI. Ashlyn Zook got into the hit column as well.
Zook pitched for the Panthers, giving up only three earned runs over eight innings. Pekin made five errors in the field. Zook finished with seven strikeouts.
The Panthers (0-2) will go for their first win tonight when they host Cardinal.
Cardinal softball smashes Danville
The Cardinal High School softball team won its first road contest of the year 11-1 Thursday at Danville.
Shelby Smith, hitting ninth in the batting order, went 2-3 with two RBI and a double. Senior Carlie Bennett went 2-4 with a RBI.
Lindsey Davis, Alexis Adam and Danae Moses each finished the game with a RBI. Jessie McElderry showed speed out of the three-spot in the order by stealing three bases.
Lexi Fullenkamp pitched all five innings, giving up six hits and striking out five in the process.
The Comets (2-2) take on Pekin tonight.
Van Buren gets first win in softball
It took only three innings for the Van Buren softball team to take care of Harmony 12-0 Thursday in Keosauqua.
Senior Abby Rider went 2-3 with three RBIs to lead the Van Buren offense. Taylor Murguia went 1-2 with a double and 3 RBI. Libby King, Caitlyn Millard, Hallie Whitten and Alisha Fitzsimmons each picked up RBI in the victory.
Fitzsimmons pitched all three innings and struck out six.
The Warriors (1-1) play Davis County tonight.
Pekin baseball gets first victory
The Pekin baseball team got its first win of the year Thursday when it defeated Wapello 9-6 at Pekin High School.
Keaton Winn led the offense, going 3-3 on the night. Cole Reighard, Drew Wells and Jaydan Nicholson each got two hits.
Nicholson finished the night with 2 RBI and also picked up the win on the mound.
Pekin (1-1) travels to face Cardinal tonight in Eldon.
