Pekin softball, baseball both win big over WACO
The Pekin baseball and softball teams both produced blowout wins over WACO Friday at Pekin.
The baseball team won 20-0 in a game that lasted just three and half innings. Zach Sloan pitched those four innings for the Panthers, and struck out 11 batters while not allowing a single hit.
Kolby Allsup was productive out of the leadoff spot, going 2-3 and scoring three runs. Keaton Winn went 3-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs.
Sloan, Cade Millikin, Petie Club, Jaydan Nicholson, Trever Northup and Cole Reighard each drove in multiple runs.
Pekin (6-3) hosts Lone Tree (6-3) tonight.
Pekin softball won its matchup over WACO 16-1. The Panthers scored all 16 of their runs in the first two innings.
Cleanup hitter Tiana Slaney led Pekin offensively with three hits including a double, two runs scored and four RBIs. Madelyn Baker and Sloan Reighard both finished 2-2 with a double. Reighard scored scored three times and drove in two runs, while Baker scored twice and had one RBI.
Pekin (7-5) softball will host Lone Tree (6-8) tonight in Packwood.
Warriors win three weekend games
The Van Buren baseball team improved to 13-1 on the season after winning three games this weekend.
The wins started with a 5-0 victory Friday over Danville in Keosauqua. Sophomore Robert Barker pitched seven shutout innings. He allowed three hits and struck out 11 batters.
The Warriors moved on and beat Keokuk 5-0 Saturday at the Central Lee Tournament. Robby Laughlin hit a home run and had two RBIs. Brandon Plecker finished 2-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Garrett Saunders went 1-3 with a double, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Laughlin and Tyson Sprouse combined to pitch seven shutout innings and strikeout eight batters.
Saunders hit two home runs and finished with five RBIs in Van Buren’s 13-1 win over Central Lee to close out the tournament. Overall he went 4-5 and also scored three runs.
Laughlin and Sprouse both had two RBIs. Will Mertens went 2-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Van Buren will host West Burlington (5-5) tonight.
Van Buren girls defeat Danville
A walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Van Buren softball team a 4-3 home victory Friday over Danville (3-6).
Alicia Fitzsimmons pitched seven innings for the Warriors (3-6). She allowed six hits and two earned runs, and finished with three strikeouts.
Taylor Murguia went 2-4 with a double, a run scored and a RBI. Caitlyn Millard went 2-4 and scored a run. Fitzsimmons, Abby Rider and Jessie Cassens each finished with a RBI.
Van Buren will host West Burlington tonight.
Cardinal baseball now 5-6 on year
The Cardinal baseball team lost to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 6-3 Friday in Eldon.
Brennon Elder pitched seven innings and allowed only three earned runs. He struck out 11 batters.
The Comets traveled to the East Marshall Tournament and lost 10-3 against PCM (Monroe) and 8-1 to East Marshall.
Cody Streeby and Trevor Albert both had one hit and a RBI against PCM.
Conner McElderry went 2-3 with a double and a run scored against East Marshall.
The Comets (5-6) will host New London tonight.
