Eighth grade A team loses to Edward Stone

 

The Fairfield eighth grade girls’ basketball team was defeated Thursday by Burlington Edward Stone 32-28.

The Trojans were up 9-8 at halftime and held a lead in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold on for the win.

“These girls never quit fighting,” coach Derek Philips said. “They played hard until the final buzzer. We made some mistakes that we got away with against other teams, but didn’t tonight. It was a good learning experience for us.”

Ashtyn Drish led Fairfield with 13 points. Amiah Neff put in seven points and Alie Kensett scored four. Sophie Allen and Nicole Buch each scored two points.

The Trojans play again Thursday at home against Mount Pleasant.

 

Southeastern announces winter baseball camp

 

Southeastern Community College will be hosting a youth pitching camp Jan. 5 in West Burlington.

The Youth MVP Pitching Camp, which is for ages 7-10, will be from 9-11 a.m. The Future Stars Pitching Camp, which is for ages 11-14, will be held from 12-2 p.m. The day will come to a close with the Advanced Pitching Camp, which is for ages 15-18, from 3-5 p.m. Registration for each of the camps will take place a half-hour prior to the camp starting.

The head coach of the Southeastern Blackhawks is Justin Schulte. Schulte is entering his 16th season as a head coach and his eighth season as the coach of the Blackhawks.

 

Seventh grade boys win at Fort Madison

 

The Fairfield seventh grade boys basketball team defeated Fort Madison 37-24 Tuesday.

Carson Crile led the Trojans with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Austin Simpson scored 12 points and brought down nine rebounds. Colin Breen, Cole Engle, Tristan Waugh, Britton Bowman and Mark Diers all got on the scoreboard as well.

“We were a little rusty on the offensive end of the floor but that’s going to happen coming off Thanksgiving break,” coach Tony Vandegriff said. “I thought we really got after it on the defensive end which let us get our running game going in the third quarter and that was nice to see.”

The Trojans won 17-15 in the B game. Cooper Drish and Reece Klehm each scored four points. Noah Stone put in three points.

Fairfield defeated Burlington Edward Stone 48-35 Thursday. Simpson scored a team high 21 points and nine rebounds. Crile scored 11 points while also dishing out 11 assists.

The Trojans B team lost 20-17. Drish scored six points and Stone scored four.
