SPORTS IN BRIEF: Basketball, cancellations, Ide Gymnastics
JV boys fall to Davis County
The Fairfield JV boys’ basketball team lost to Davis County 54-45 Tuesday.
Landen Greiner led the Trojans with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Nick Higgins scored 10 points. Cameron Baumann scored eight points and had two assists.
The Trojans are 0-5 on the season.
Eighth grade girls finish season
The eighth grade girls’ basketball A team finished its season Thursday with a 36-23 victory over Ottumwa.
The game was tied 16-16 at halftime, but the Trojans only allowed two points in the third quarter.
Ashtyn Drish scored 11 points. Alie Kensett put in eight points and Taylor Myers scored seven points.
“This was a great way to finish our season,” Fairfield coach Derek Philips said. “It took us a bit to get going, but once we did we played really well. It was nice to see improvement from our last games.”
The B team won 24-22. Katrina Cecchini, Lynsey Finney and Maddie Smith each scored six points.
“These girls never quit,” Philips said. “They kept battling and got the win tonight. I could always count on these girls giving their best every night. A great way to finish a very solid season.”
Seventh graders conclude season
The Fairfield seventh grade boys’ basketball A team finished its season Thursday with a 51-21 victory over Ottumwa.
“Overall a very successful season for all teams,” Fairfield coach Tony Vandegriff said. “I can’t wait to see how much improvement they make before next season.”
Carson Crile led the team with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. Cole Engle scored 14 points and recorded four steals. Colin Breen scored eight points and came through with seven assists. Austin Simpson scored six points and secured seven rebounds.
Mark Diers, Tristan Waugh, Jackson Weaton and Cooper Drish each scored as well. The A team finished 12-0 on the season.
The B team lost 20-16. Weaton scored 12 points in the defeat.
The C team won 14-8. Sage Crandell scored 10 points.
Pekin, Cardinal games cancelled
The Cardinal at Pekin boys’ and girls’ basketball games were cancelled Thursday night due to inclement weather.
Pekin and Van Buren wrestlers were kept off the mat Thursday when the Triangular both teams were to attend in West Burlington was cancelled. The wrestling meet has been rescheduled for Jan. 13.
Cardinal wrestling was also cancelled. Cardinal sporting events for tonight have been cancelled as well.
Ide Gymnastics competes in Marshalltown
Fairfield trampolinists who compete with Ide Gymnastics jumped at the United States Trampoline and Tumbling Association meet in Marshalltown on Dec. 14.
USTA meets have three events: trampoline, double mini, which is a small trampoline, and rod floor, which is for tumbling.
The competition is divided according to age and skill level and Ide Gymnastics came back to Fairfield with seven first place trophies.
Juliette Pohren received a first place trophy for double mini and a third place for trampoline. Kristin Burnstedt got first place for double mini. Bryanna Popejoy received two first place trophies for trampoline and double mini. Olivia McClaran got a first for double mini, a second place for trampoline and a third place for rod floor. Kiara Bickham received a first place trophy for trampoline. Taryn Scheuermann came in second in trampoline. Kaitlyn Scheuermann received a first place trophy for trampoline and fourth place in double mini.
