Cardinal boys beat MSAE to end losing streak

The Cardinal boys’ basketball team broke its five game losing streak by beating Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment 63-34 Tuesday at the Maharishi Fieldhouse.

Cardinal applied full court pressure in the first quarter and led 16-8 after the first quarter. The third quarter is where the Comets blew it open, going on a 24-4 run to take a comfortable lead.

“It was good to get back to playing our type of basketball,” Cardinal coach Jay Olson. “We had everyone contribute in some sort of way and we played unselfish basketball.”

Charlie Rachford led Cardinal with 21 points. Kaleb Durflinger scored 15 points and got 10 rebounds. Chase Courtney led the Comets with 11 rebounds. Sam Pedersen got eight points and three steals.

Avery Mullenneaux led MSAE with 10 points and five rebounds. David Fleshman had seven points, three rebounds and two steals. Suraj Pullapantula scored six points and got two steals.

Cardinal (6-6) plays at Pekin Thursday, while MSAE (0-11) will host Harmony on Friday.

 

Van Buren girls overcome deficit to beat Danville

The Van Buren girls’ basketball team defeated Danville 43-39 Tuesday in Keosauqua.

The Warriors were down 13-4 after the first quarter, but wound up outscoring Danville (5-8) 31-17 in the second half.

Kaitlyn Johnson led Van Buren with 21 points and seven steals. Jenna Thornburg got six points and eight rebounds. Shayla Filson scored six points and made three blocks.

The Warriors (6-6) will host West Burlington on Friday.

 

Cardinal wrestlers host regional foes

The Cardinal wrestling team hosted Albia, Sigourney and Tri-County/Montezuma Tuesday in Eldon.

Albia defeated Cardinal 54-30. Tyler Albert (170), Seth Steen (152), Bryce Benedict (120), Ryan Cale (113) and Jonathan Rupe (220) each won by forfeit for the Comets.

Sigourney outscored Cardinal 48-27. Albert won his match by decision. Josh Ramos (182) and Drayton Hamm (106) both won by pin. Cale and Benedict each earned points for the Comets through forfeits.

Cardinal’s closest dual of the night came in a 38-33 loss to Tri-County/Montezuma. Rupe, Ramos and Steen each earned points on forfeits. Dakota Miller (145), Albert and Cale each won their matches.

Albert and Rupe are both coming off of injuries from last season.

“I look foreword for Rupe to improve and get back into wrestling tough matches,” Cardinal coach Tom Lamansky said. “We will have to keep working on our fundamentals and improving for the next few weeks.”

Cardinal hosts Mediapolis, Danville, West Burlington and Notre Dame on Thursday.

 

Freshmen girls defeat Oskaloosa

The Fairfield freshmen girls’ basketball team won Tuesday in Oskaloosa 46-25.

Kaylee Watson delivered 14 points to lead Fairfield. Kenady Waugh scored eight points, Natalie Angstead came through with seven and Brooke McLain scored six.

The team is now 6-3 and play Thursday at Washington.

 

Eighth grade boys beat Washington

The Fairfield eighth grade boys’ basketball team topped Washington 48-44 Thursday.

The Trojans were down 29-18 at half, but came back to outscore the Demons 30-15 in the second half.

Kolton Webber scored 18 points and brought in 10 rebounds. James Lyman scored 13 points and dished out five assists. Steeler Higdon got seven points and 10 rebounds.

Fairfield travels Thursday to Ottumwa.
