Cardinal boys, girls each defeat West Burlington
The Cardinal girls’ basketball team improved to 2-3 on the season by beating West Burlington
I was very happy with our defensive intensity in the the second half,” Cardinal coach Aaron Dose said. “We hope that this game gives us momentum going into Pekin Thursday night.”
Sophomore Jessie McElderry led the team with 18 points and four steals. She also grabbed 10 rebounds. Delaney Ridgway scored 15 points and led the team in rebounds with 13. Danae Moses put in 12 points and also recorded four steals.
The girls are 2-3 going into their matchup today at Pekin. Cardinal travels Friday to Van Buren.
The Cardinal boys also beat West Burlington. The game’s final score was 61-49.
Kaleb Durflinger and Cody Streeby combined for 39 points to lead the Comets to the win. Charlie Rachford and Sam Pederson each scored seven points.
Cardinal is now 3-1, but must travel to Pekin and Van Buren before winter break.
Van Buren boys defeat Notre Dame
The Van Buren boys’ basketball team is still undefeated after taking down Burlington Notre Dame 75-56 Tuesday.
Sophomore Will Mertens led the team with 20 points, seven steals and nine rebounds. Garrett Saunders scored 18 points and led the squad with five assists. Thomas Fitzsimmons scored 14 points.
The Warriors (5-0) have another game against Notre Dame tonight before hosting Cardinal Friday.
Eighth grade girls fall to Panthers
The Fairfield eighth grade girls’ basketball A team lost to Mt. Pleasant 27-19 Tuesday.
The game was tied at 13 at halftime. The Trojans only managed one basket from the field in the second half.
“Our defense really did a nice job tonight,” Fairfield coach Derek Philips said. “We got some steals and didn’t give up easy shots. We just couldn’t get shots to fall and were pretty tired.”
Ashtyn Drish led Fairfield with 12 points. Alie Kensett scored six points and Sophie Allen had one.
The Trojans won the B team game 26-15. Katrina Cecchini and Lynsey Finney both scored six points. Abbey Gridley scored four points. Yasmine Fear and Maddie Smith each put down three points.
The last game of the season for the girls is today at home against Ottumwa.
FMS wrestlers battle at meet
FMS wrestlers competed Tuesday in Washington.
The double winners were Brad Swanson, Zach Barnes and Brendon Lunsford.
Single match winners were Mason Allen, Hakim Blakeney, Stetson Spees, Gannon Courtright and Derek Beasley.
Mid-Prairie, Burlington and Mt. Pleasant were also at the meet. Fairfield’s next meet is Jan. 14 at Fairfield Middle School.
Seventh grade boys win two more
The Fairfield seventh grade boys’ basketball A team added two more wins on the year with victories over Burlington Aldo Leopold (55-6) and Mt. Pleasant (51-28).
Carson Crile led the charge against Aldo Leopold with 18 points, five rebounds and five steals.
The Trojans won the B game 18-16. Reece Klehm scored 10 points. Colin Breen scored 12 points and had seven assists.
Breen was the leading scorer against Mt. Pleasant with 19 points. Cole Engle had 12 points and recorded three steals.
Mt. Pleasant won the B game 16-10 and the C game 14-12.
