SPORTS IN BRIEF: Fairfield, MSAE, Pekin basketball roundup
First win still eluding Pioneers
The Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment boys’ basketball team got to play at home Tuesday for the first time this season, but lost to Central Lee 64-42.
MSAE (0-4) endured a tough first half. The Pioneers were shut out in the second quarter, and the halftime score was 42-10 in favor of Central Lee. The third quarter was all MSAE, as they went on an 18-4 run. In the end, Central Lee was too much to handle.
Avery Mullenneaux led the team with 12 points and seven rebounds. Surya Sawhney put down 11 points, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Sawhney blocked three shots and had three steals as well.
Senior Rashan Anderson made his first start at point guard and contributed three points, three steals, two assists and two rebounds.
The Pioneers host Notre Dame on Friday.
Pekin boys defeat Mediapolis 48-35
The Pekin boys’ basketball team is now 4-1 on the season after beating Mediapolis 48-35 at home Tuesday.
The game moved at a fast pace, yet it was still a defensive battle as each team tried to keep the other off the scoreboard.
Senior Brody Long scored 12 points, but his team leading 15 rebounds and four blocks helped the Panthers drastically on the defensive end. Cade Millikin scored 12 points and had five steals. Jared Bond pitched in with six points.
“We held the ball and didn’t get much movement against their zone but 14 offensive rebounds helped lead is to the win,” Pekin coach Ken Hutchinson said.
The Panthers host Cardinal on Thursday before a huge road test Friday at IMS.
Pekin girls suffer first loss of season
The Pekin girls’ basketball team was defeated by Mediapolis 61-49 Tuesday in Packwood.
Darby Massner scored 21 points and Andrea Larson completed a double-double to lead the No. 5 (Class 3A) Bullettes (6-0) to the win. Pekin (5-1) was previously undefeated.
Pekin’s Gwynne Wright scored 12 points on four three-pointers. Beth Atwood scored 11 points, Jessica Horras tallied eight, and Samantha Wright put in seven points.
Pekin plays Thursday against Cardinal.
Fairfield JV girls earn win over Davis County
The Trojan girls’ JV basketball team earned a 38-29 victory Tuesday over Davis County at Fairfield High School.
Sami Fritz led the team with eight points and three steals. Mackenzie Flattery and Kenady Waugh each scored six points. Kaylee Watson scored five points. Haley Beard recorded four steals.
Freshmen girls win over Mustangs
The Fairfield freshmen girls’ basketball team beat Davis County 49-24 Tuesday.
Brynna Bowman scored 14 points and had two steals. Kenady Waugh scored 10 points and also recorded three steals and two rebounds.
Sarah Swanson scored eight points and snatched away three steals. Natalie Angstead scored six points and also had three steals. Kaylee Watson and Jenna Crile each pitched in with four points.
