Pekin boys defeat Columbus
The Pekin boys basketball team won again Tuesday when it defeated Columbus 70-44.
The Panthers (2-1) were down 11-9 after the first quarter, but used the rest of the game to build a lead over Columbus.
Brody Long scored 15 points and secured seven rebounds. Jared Long put down 14 points and led the squad with nine rebounds.
Cade Millikin scored 11 points while also recording four steals and three assists. Keaton Winn scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Pekin has had three different players finish as the top scorer in its first three contests of the year.
The Panthers travel Friday to Louisa-Muscatine. Pekin will host Mediapolis and Cardinal next week.
Fairfield JV boys defeated by Albia
The Fairfield JV boys’ basketball team lost a close game Tuesday to Albia 40-36.
Alex Crile scored nine points and had three steals to lead the Trojans. Alex Simpson scored six points and Cameron Baumann scored five.
Nick Higgins and Nathan Davidson both scored four points.
The JV boys are now 0-2 on the season.
Van Buren boys take large step by beating Danville
The Van Buren boys’ basketball team made a statement Tuesday when it defeated Danville 76-70.
Senior center Thomas Fitzsimmons led the Warriors with 26 points. Garrett Saunders put in 20 points. Tanner Smith scored 10.
Brandon Plecker and Will Mertens each pitched in with nine points.
Danville went a combined 54-2 the last two seasons and was 2-0 coming in to its game against Van Buren.
The Warriors (3-0) play Friday at West Burlington.
Van Buren girls fall to Danville
The Van Buren girls’ basketball team lost Tuesday to Danville by the score of 45-27.
Kaitlyn Johnson scored seven points and recorded four steals to lead the Warriors. Shayla Filson secured seven rebounds to go along with five points. Abbey Rider scored five points as well.
The Warriors are now 2-1 on the season. Van Buren’s next game is Friday in West Burlington.
