SPORTS IN BRIEF: Fairfield soccer, Fairfield girls' golf
Boys’ soccer gets by Washington
The Fairfield boys’ soccer team defeated Washington 3-2 in overtime Thursday at Trojan Stadium.
Solomon Constant and Brayden Miller both scored goals in regulation. Shiekh Saine netted the winning goal just minutes into the overtime period. Constant now has 22 goals on the year to lead the team. Saine and Miller both have five.
Derek Robinson had one assist. Senior Austin Lauderman made 17 saves while only surrendering two goals.
Fairfield (8-8) hosts Keokuk tonight to conclude the regular season. The Trojans are 5-4 against Southeast Conference opponents and lost to Keokuk earlier this season on the road.
Once the regular season is concluded, Fairfield will not play until Thursday, when it hosts either Mt. Pleasant or Washington in the second round substate game.
Golfers second in Pella triangular
The Fairfield girls’ golf team took second in a triangular Thursday at Pella.
Pella won the meet with the score of 206. The Trojans scored 218 and Knoxville finished third with 231.
“We were a couple of strokes higher than I would have liked,” Fairfield coach Joe Kruzich said. “We hadn’t shot in a while and we needed to shake some rust off, which is good with regionals coming up.”
Lindsey Repp was the meet medalist and shot a 48. Madelyn Swan shot a 52 and teammate Olivia Hammel was right behind her with a 58. Kylee Marlay (60), Abby Adam (63) and Taylor Marlay (69) rounded out the varsity squad for Fairfield.
The Trojans now turn their attention to the regional meet, which will be in Dewitt at Springbrook Country Club. Davenport Assumption, Clear-Creek Amana, North Scott, Davenport North and Keokuk will be among the teams joining Fairfield in the 11 team tournament.
“For us to be able to advance, we’ll have to put together four great scores,” Kruzich said.
