Pioneers take down Greyhounds

The Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment boys’ tennis team ended its regular season strong with a 9-0 win on the road at Burlington.

“The team is ready for the postseason,” MSAE coach Steve Briggs said. “District is Thursday so the focus shifts to more specialized practice depending on whether a player is entering singles or doubles.”

Chandre Morales, Solaris Nite, Surya Sawhney, David Fleshman, Avery Mulleneux and Dave Wadsworth each picked up wins for the Pioneers.

Districts will be played Thursday at Fairfield Middle School. The Pioneers are in the same district as the Trojans, Keokuk, Fort Madison, Mt. Pleasant, Davis County and two other schools.

 

Trojans edge Nikes in soccer

The Fairfield girls’ soccer team won at home 2-1 Monday thanks to goals from Cladia Sloat and Huma Liptak.

Claire Dupuis scored a penalty kick goal in the second half for the Nikes. Erica Winslow got to two assists for Fairfield, and senior Keri Schwarz made seven saves.

The Trojans are now 6-2 and will travel Thursday to Fort Madison.

 

Keokuk defeats Fairfield boys

The Fairfield boys’ soccer team lost on the road Monday at Keokuk 6-0.

The Chiefs are now 8-3 on the season, while the Trojans fell to 5-7.

Fairfield will host Fort Madison on Thursday.

 

MSAE falls to Burlington on links

The Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment boys’ golf team fell 170-243 to Notre Dame in Burlington Monday.

Mickey DeAngelis shot a 43 to lead the Pioneers. Nathaniel Zhu had the next highest score for the Pioneers, shooting a 55. Doga Ozesmi shot a 62.

 

FMS boys run at Burlington meet

The Fairfield Middle School boys’ track team ran the Southeast Iowa Championship Meet on Friday in Burlington.

Fairfield finished third out of eight teams in the seventh-grade division. The 1600 sprint medley team, consisting of Cole Engle, A.J. Pohren, Carson Crile and Nickel Iseman, grabbed first place with the time of 4:30.5. Iseman would also earn first individually in the 800-meter run.

Tristan Waugh won the discus competition with a throw of 88-10.

Iseman, Dylan Harvey, Dylan Smithburg and Brian Parcell combined for second in the 4x800-meter relay. Harvey also would finish second in the 1600-meter run with the time of 5:48.01.

Colin Breen earned third in the 200-meter hurdles, with Jackson Weaton just one spot behind him. Engle, Pohren, Kosta Papazoglou and Noah Stone combined for third in the 4x100-meter relay. Papazoglou also earned third in the shot put.

Parcell finished fourth in the 400-meter dash, while Cooper Drish finished fourth in the 200-meter dash.

The Trojans finished fifth in the eighth-grade division.

Hunter Bechtel, Darren Roberts, Bowen Richmond and Aaron Haines combined for second in the 4x800-meter relay with the time of 10:34.16.

Steeler Higdon won the discus with a throw of 120-08 and also placed third in the shot put.

Richmond also would earn fourth place in the 800-meter run.

 

Fairfield girls run at state meet

Members of the Fairfield Middle School girls’ track and field team competed Saturday at the Mike Henderson Junior High Girls State Track Meet in Waukee.

Seventh-grade student Kara Jeffrey finished second in the high jump with a leap of 4-06.00.

Ashley Bloomquist finished third in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:40.29. She also managed fifth in the 800-meter run. Bryanna Popejoy grabbed fourth in the discus throw.

As for the eighth-graders, Kristin Burnstedt finished seventh in the long jump. The 1600 sprint medley team finished in sixth position.
