Pekin softball falls in extra innings
The Pekin softball team lost its season opener at Lone Tree 6-5 Tuesday in eight innings.
The Panthers jumped on Lone Tree early, scoring four runs in the first inning. Peyton Atwood, who had two hits on the night, and Bridget Fritchen would both drive in a run in the third inning.
Lone Tree came back and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, and then would score a walk-off run in the eighth.
Maddy Baker, Cassidy Tolle, Sloan Reighard, Tiana Slaney and Kaylee Linder each scored a run for the Panthers.
Pekin will go for its first win under new coach Allison Glick tonight when it hosts Wapello.
Van Buren slams West Burlington
The Van Buren High School baseball team backed up its Class 1A No. 3 rating Tuesday with a 16-2 road win at West Burlington to start the season.
Leadoff hitter Garrett Saunders went 3-4, belting a home run and driving in four runs. Cleanup hitter Robert Barker went 2-4, drove in three runs and scored twice. Robby Laughlin contributed a three-run home run.
Senior Tom Fitzsimmons pitched five innings, had one strikeout and didn’t allow a run.
The Warriors will host Harmony and New London on consecutive days before playing in the Davis County tournament Saturday.
Cardinal splits doubleheader against Burlington
The Cardinal High School softball team split a home doubleheader Wednesday against Burlington.
The Comets lost the first game 10-5. Alexis Adam went 4-4 from the leadoff spot. She scored two runs and had three stolen bases. Jessie McElderry went 3-4 with two two runs scored, two RBI and two stolen bases. Danae Moses, Lindsey Davis and Carlie Bennett each had a hit.
The Comets jumped on Burlington early in the second game, scoring seven runs in the first two innings. Cardinal went on to win 11-6.
Adam added three more hits and three more runs scored in this contest. Moses, Bennett and Shelby Smith each recorded two hits. Kelsie Bennett and Moses both had two RBIs.
Cardinal (1-2) plays again tonight at Danville before traveling to Pekin on Friday.
