SPORTS IN BRIEF: Pekin softball, Fairfield golf camp
Pekin softball gets home victory
The Pekin High School softball team defeated Louisa-Muscatine 13-8 Tuesday.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead, scoring six runs in the first inning to give pitcher Ashlyn Zook a huge cushion. Zook pitched seven innings and allowed eight hits, three walks and four earned runs while striking out three. She now has a 1.49 ERA on the season.
Leadoff hitter Madelyn Baker went 3-4 with a home run and two doubles. Baker scored twice and drove in three runs. She now leads the team in RBIs with eight on the season.
Freshman Kaylee Linder went 3-3, stole four bases and scored three times.
Cassidy Tolle went 2-4 with a triple, a home run and two RBI. Tiana Slaney and Bridget Fritchen both drove in two runs as well. Nikole Arendt and Sloan Reighard both had one hit, scored two runs and had one RBI.
After starting the year 0-3, the Panthers (5-5) have won five of their last seven contests. Pekin travels to Mediapolis for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference matchup Thursday.
Junior golf camp to begin June 16
The 2014 junior golf hole-in-one camp will be held from 1-3 p.m. June 16-20 at Fairfield Golf & Country Club.
Fairfield boys’ golf coach Mick Flattery will be running this camp. The camp is intended for boys and girls in grades 4-8. Flattery will teach the basics, including golf rules, etiquette, short game, fairway shots and swing mechanics.
