Triathlon signup to conclude soon
The Mini Sprint Trail Triathlon will be held June 21 at 9 a.m.
The triathlon consists of a 250-yard swim, a six-mile bike ride and a 1.3-mile run.
The event is for individuals 14 years of age and up. The cost is $55 per relay team and $35 individually. Check in is at 8 a.m. at Waterworks Park.
The Fairfield Park and Recreation office will cancel the event if more sign-ups are not received by noon Wednesday.
Cardinal softball wins seventh straight game
The Cardinal High School softball team has won seven games in a row after a 0-2 start.
The Comets defeated Central Lee 10-0 Monday in Eldon. Sophomore pitcher Lexi Fullenkamp now has a 2.67 ERA on the season after pitching five shutout innings Monday. Fullenkamp allowed four hits and one walk.
“This was a good win for us going into Wednesday’s game against first ranked Highland,” Cardinal coach Hilarie Droz said. “All the momentum is going our way and we have nothing to lose.”
All nine players in Cardinal’s lineup got a hit, and the Comets would smack 14 hits in total.
Catcher Jessie McElderry went 2-3 with a home run and three RBI. Danae Moses went 3-3 with a double, triple, three runs scored and two RBI. Carlie Bennett and Alexis Adam both had two hits.
The Comets (7-2) play Wednesday at Highland.
Comets get win over Central Lee
The Cardinal High School baseball team won 4-3 Monday at Central Lee.
Senior Conner McElderry was a key for the Comets, both on the mound and at the plate. He pitched a complete game, allowing 10 hits, one walk and three earned runs over seven innings. He struck out four.
McElderry went 2-4 at the plate with a RBI. Cody Streeby went 1-4 with a double, a RBI and a run scored. Brennon Elder and Tyler Albert scored Cardinal’s other two runs.
Cardinal (4-3) is scheduled to play at Burlington Notre Dame tonight.
Panthers pick up win at Highland
The Pekin baseball team picked up a road victory at Highland by the score of 6-2 Monday.
Multiple Panthers produced at the plate. Kolby Allsup went 2-4 with two RBI. Petie Clubb was 2-3 with a double and two RBI. Cade Millikin and Keaton Winn were both 2-4. Trevor Northup smacked a double.
Millikin pitched a complete game, striking out six and allowing just two hits.
Pekin is now 4-3 and is scheduled to host Louisa-Muscatine tonight. A trip to Mediapolis awaits them Thursday.
Pekin softball falls to No. 1 Highland
Pekin almost escaped Highland with a victory Monday against the Class 2A No. 1 ranked Huskies.
Pekin lost 4-3, but scored two runs in the first inning and led 3-2 late in the game.
“I was excited with the way we played,” Pekin coach Allison Glick said. “We scored right away. Our hitting and defense were pretty strong.”
Ashlyn Zook pitched the entire game for Pekin, striking out two while allowing three walks and four hits.
Madelyn Baker led Pekin at the plate by going 2-3 with a double and a RBI. Cassidy Tolle recorded a RBI.
Pekin (4-5) hosts Louisa-Muscatine tonight.
