Jan 23, 2014

Van Buren hands Danville second loss this season

The baseball and football programs made school history for Van Buren in 2013.

It looks as though the boys’ basketball team will too. The Warriors defeated Danville 79-78 Tuesday. The Bears have only lost two games this season, and both of them were to Van Buren (11-1). Danville had lost two combined games the last two seasons.

Warriors’ head coach Fred Parsons clearly wanted to stick with his best players the whole game because only six players saw the court.

Thomas Fitzsimmons led the Warriors with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Garrett Saunders scored 18 points, which includes a last second shot that won the game. Saunders also had eight assists.

Fellow starter Will Mertens scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Brandon Plecker finished with six points, eight assists and four steals.

The Warriors will host West Burlington Friday.

Trojans vs. Cancer scheduled Friday

The fifth annual Trojans vs. Cancer night will be held Friday as part of the boy/girl basketball doubleheader against Washington.

All the money raised at this event will support the American Cancer Society’s efforts in Iowa.

Trojans vs. Cancer T-shirts and 50/50 raffle tickets will be available. A $1 donation will be made with each admission ticket sold. The Fairfield High School student council will hold a soup supper, and there will be a bag tossing competition as well.

The girls’ team will wear pink uniforms and the boys’ will wear pink warm-up attire.

Fairfield JV boys lose to Centerville

The Fairfield JV boys’ basketball team’s three-game winning streak was snapped Tuesday with a 40-36 loss to Centerville.

Nick Higgins scored 16 points to lead the Trojans. Higgins also got nine steals, six rebounds and four assists. Alex Crile scored seven points and Alex Simpson scored six.

The Trojans are now 4-9 on the season. They will play again Friday at home against Washington.

Bradley defeats Northern Iowa

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Walt Lemon, Jr. scored 28 points, shooting 50 percent from the field, to lead Bradley to a 69-65 victory over Northern Iowa on Wednesday night.

Seth Tuttle scored 20 points with seven rebounds for the Panthers (10-9, 4-3) who hit just 36.7 percent from the field overall.
