SPORTS IN BRIEF: wrestling and girls' basketball
The Fairfield eighth grade girls’ basketball team traveled Tuesday to Burlington Aldo Leopold and won 45-13.
The halftime score was 20-7, and nearly the same total for both teams was duplicated in the second half.
Ashtyn Drish led the Trojans with 10 points. Sophie Allen put in eight points. Lynsey Finney and Taylor Myers each scored six.
“We started off slow, but got going late in the second half,” coach Derek Philips said. “We will keep working hard and getting better every night.”
Alie Kensett and Kristen Daughterty each chipped in with four points.
The girls play again today at Burlington Edward Stone.
The Fairfield Middle School wrestling team competed Tuesday in Fort Madison against the Bloodhounds, Washington and Keokuk.
Mason Allen, Clinton Morrison. Stetson Spees, Zach Barnes, Jesse Birlson, Gannon Courtright and Brendon Lunsford each were double winners at the meet. Allen, Spees and Courtright were each able to win one of their matches by fall in under a minute.
Tugg Hill, Jason Johannes and Matthew Smith each won a single match. All three were winners by fall.
The team’s match record at the meet was 17-15.
The team’s next meet is Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in Burlington. The team’s next home meet is Jan. 14.
