State wrestling kicks off Thursday
The Iowa state wrestling tournament, one of the biggest event’s in the state each year, begins Thursday with a field of 672 athletes vying for the chance to be one of 42 state champions.
Six area wrestlers will be a part of it all, with matches taking place on eight mats at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Fairfield and Cardinal will be represented by two wrestlers apiece, while Pekin and Van Buren have each qualified one athlete.
Among the area qualifiers, Fairfield seniors Seth Davisson (170 pounds) and Jake Mineart (220) are both returning state qualifiers with the goal of standing on the podium for the first time. Cardinal 113-pounder Ryan Cale, a junior, and Pekin senior Austyn Vogel (152) also are no strangers to the state tournament.
Newcomers to the three-day tournament include Cardinal 182-pounder Dustin Miller, a transfer from Davis County, as well as Van Buren junior Jacob Heisel at 126 pounds.
All wrestlers will compete in their first matches Thursday. Davisson and Mineart will take on Schyler Knoll (35-9) of Perry and Aaron Beaman (37-7) of Greene County in their respective openers. Vogel has Kaleb Schmidt (28-14) of Wilton while Heisel will face Alburnett’s Jacob Koch (34-13) in the first round. Cale and Miller have drawn Don Bosco’s Grant Barron (27-14) and Midland’s Ryan Leonard (44-3), respectively.
