Survivors invited to ‘Finish the Fight’
Jefferson County Relay for Life organizers are inviting cancer survivors to “Finish the Fight” during survivor activities planned during the relay Sept. 27.
The 17th annual Jefferson County Relay for Life is set from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.
The Finish the Fight activities for cancer survivors will include a supper and a survivor ceremony.
The supper, prepared by the Jefferson County Pork Producers, will be served at 5:30 p.m. in the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activity Building.
The survivor ceremony is set for 6:30 p.m.
Cancer survivors who would like to participate in the supper and survivor ceremony are asked to register by Sept. 12 by calling Cathy Giberson at 919-0565 or emailing email@example.com, with a name, address, phone, number attending, years of survivorship, cancer type and T-shirt size.
Survivors can check in from 10:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. the day of the relay. Check-in will be closed during the noon opening ceremonies.
The Jefferson County Relay for Life, a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, is planned for 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. The opening season will be at noon. Relay by the Campfire, weather permitting, is planned after the relay.
The committee voted to move the event from its usual spring/summer date as it was becoming an ever-increasing busy time with graduations, weekend-long ball tournaments and festivals.
This year’s theme for the event as well as the American Cancer Society’s motto is “Finish the Fight.” Sixty years ago, one out of three people diagnosed with cancer survived. Today, thanks in part to the work of the American Cancer Society, two out of three will survive, according to committee member Dawn Bechtel.
Teams and volunteers are always needed and welcomed. For informaiton, visit the website www.relayforlife.org/jeffersoncountyia or contact Kortney Heald at 319-695-3820.
