Thanks to Honor Flight
Oct. 4, 2016
To the Editor:
On Sept. 20 I was privileged to be part of the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight — an overwhelming experience.
Despite a two-hour fog-delayed takeoff from Cedar Rapids, we arrived at Regan National Airport to an enthusiastic reception. Thus began a day full of scheduled visits to the many memorials and Washington sights our great country is famous for — the World War II memorial; Lincoln, Korean and Vietnam memorials; Arlington Cemetery; on and on — all buses led by police escort.
Our return flight reached Cedar Rapids at 11:45 p.m., to be greeted by flag-bearing women and men veterans on each side, forming an aisle which was extended by many Knights of Columbus members in full dress, while a wonderful band played patriotic tunes. And so we were met by family, friends and well-wishers expressing their gratitude with heartfelt handshakes.
What a wonderful day, memorable and emotional, thanks to Eastern Iowa Honor Flight, their staff and the many volunteers who graciously attended to our every need, wheelchairs, meals, etc., all acts happily rendered.
Thanks to all who had a part in making our day special, including Richmond AMVETS Post 107. I am so grateful to have been included in this trip, feeling both honored and humbled.
