Thanksgiving in July brings in donations for Lord’s Cupboard
The 2014 Thanksgiving in July food drive and fundraiser for The Lord’s Cupboard of Jefferson County netted more than 3,000 pounds of food and $4,700 in cash donations.
The annual event was held July 25 through Aug. 2. Organizers said 3,278 pounds of food were donated during that week, plus more than $4,700 was raised through: donations from individuals, churches, and companies, a Trivia Night at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center, Fairfield Hy-Vee grill-outs, and shoppers “rounding up” at the Hy-Vee registers.
All cash and food donations will be used to help Jefferson County individuals and families in need of food assistance.
“This was the biggest Thanksgiving In July yet, and the food and funds raised will be integral in handling the ever-increasing numbers of clients we serve,” said Laura Cohen, coordinator of The Lord’s Cupboard. “We could not have pulled it off without the assistance of so many companies, civic groups, churches and even Fairfield’s own municipal band, accepting donations on our behalf.”
The Lord’s Cupboard of Jefferson County serves as the county’s sole emergency food pantry and serves about 500 families per month. Nearly 50 percent of those served by the pantry are under the age of 18.
Donations of food or cash are always accepted at The Lord’s Cupboard, which is open 1-4 pm. Monday through Friday.
