Theme sought for Whoopee Days

Apr 29, 2013

BRIGHTON — Brighton area residents can put on their creative thinking caps and submit ideas for a theme for the 103rd Brighton Whoopee Days.

Ideas are due by May 6.

Ideas can be submitted at many Brighton businesses and at Brighton City Hall.

The winner will receive $25 in Brighton Chamber Bucks that may be spent at local businesses.

Whoopee Days will be held June 13-16 in Brighton, with many traditional and many new activities.

The gooey Whoopee desserts made from a layer of marshmallow fluff and cream cheese sandwiched between a pair of cake-life chocolate cookies.

According to most accounts, they were first made in Pennsylvania Amish country, where kids shouted “Whoopie!” when they discovered them in their lunch bags. The same shouts rise up in Brighton during the annual Whoopee Days in June.

Brighton’s festival started as Booster Days in July 1910, when the completion of the paved road that runs through town was celebrated, but the name was changed to Whoopee Days in 1929.

“Whoopee” had been recently coined to express a hilarious time at about that time.
