Three area blood drives planned

Three area blood drives are planned by the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center.

The first will be from 2-7 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activity Building. Donors who last gave blood on or before Oct. 9 are eligible to give again. Walk-in donors are welcome, but call the blood center at 800-452-1097 for appointments.

The second is from 2-6:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at Mother Cabrini Parish Center in Richland. Donors who last gave blood on or before Oct. 10 are eligible to give again. Walk-in donors are welcome, but call Cindy Adam at 319-456-2722 for appointments.

The third will be from 2:30-5:45 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activity Building. Donors who last gave blood on or before Oct. 17 are eligible to give again. Walk-in donors are welcome, but call the blood center at 800-452-1097 for appointments.

According to the blood center staff, blood donation is a safe, simple procedure that takes about an hour to complete.

Donors must be at least 16 years old, in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds.

A blood donor card or other photo identification is required to donate. Sixteen-year-old donors must present a signed parental consent form; forms are available at www.bloodcenter.org.

The blood center collected 101 pints of blood during three recent blood drives.

The mobile unit collected 25 pints of blood Nov. 8 at the Birmingham Lions Building; 36 pints Nov. 13 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activity Building; and 40 pints Nov. 13 at the Hope Lutheran Church in Germanville.
