Three area blood drives scheduled
Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center has several blood drives scheduled in the area.
The Birmingham Lions Club will sponsor a blood drive from 2:30-6:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Birmingham Lions Building. To be eligible to donate, donors must have donated last on or before Jan. 3. Walk-in donors are welcome, but appointments can be made by calling Harry Anderson at 319-498-4201.
A blood drive is set from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 1 in the Jefferson County Health Center conference room. To be eligible, donors must have donated last on or before Jan. 4. Walk-in donors are welcome, but appointments can be made by calling 800-452-1097.
The Pekin High School Student Council will sponsor a blood drive from 10:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. March 6 in the high school gym. Donors must have last given blood on or before Jan. 9 to be eligible to participate. Walk-ins are welcome, but for appointments, contact a student council member or teacher Tim Magill at 319-695-3705.
According to blood center officials, blood donation is a safe, simple procedure that takes about an hour to complete.
Blood donors must be at least 16 years of age, in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds to be eligible to donate. A blood donor card or other form of photo identification is required. Sixteen-year-old donors must present a signed parental consent form each time they donate. The consent forms are available at www.bloodcenter.org.

The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center mobile unit drew 44 pints of blood Feb. 11 at the Mother Cabrini Parish Center in Richland.
Blood center officials said one pint of blood can help save the lives of up to three patients.
