Tough road slate continues for Fairfield boys

Jan 18, 2013

WILLIAMSBURG — A hard-fought first quarter gave way to a sloppy second quarter for the Trojan boys, who never recovered from a big halftime deficit at Williamsburg Thursday.

Fairfield fell behind 33-20 at the midway point, and the host Raiders maintained their dougle-digit advantage in the second half en route to a 71-49 non-conference victory.

The Trojans trailed just 9-7 after one quarter before giving up 24 points on the defensive end in the second. They found their scoring touch in the third quarter — outscoring Williamsburg 17-16 in the eight-minute stretch — but it proved too little, too late.

The loss is the second straight for Fairfield (3-10, 1-3 SEC), which also fell to eighth-ranked Centerville on Tuesday. The Raiders evened their record at 6-6 with the win.

Fairfield was led by senior Spencer Peterman’s 13 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Juniors Matt Carr and Joe Hietpas combined to hit four of Fairfield’s five treys, scoring 10 and six points respectively. Hietpas also dished out four assists.

Landon Gamrath, a junior, netted seven points and freshman Jordan Reid had five points and two assists off the bench. Vince Horras finished with four points.

The Trojans wrap up a jam-packed week with another away game tonight vs. Washington (3-9, 0-4 SEC), which Fairfield beat in their first meeting Dec. 7. The Demons, however, have won two of their past three games.
