Tourney time: Pekin hosted SEISC tournament
A season’s worth of duals all leads up to this.
The Southeast Iowa Superconference tournament was held Saturday at Pekin High School. Mediapolis owned the day, finishing with 282 points, which is 146.5 more points than second place finisher Wapello.
Cardinal senior Ryan Cale, ranked No. 6, faced a gauntlet of ranked wrestlers in the 113 pound weight division. He was able to defeat Class 2A No. 5 Shea Swafford of Mediapolis but could not defeat No. 4 ranked Jack Walker of Wapello. Cale was forced to settle for third place.
Josh Ramos (182) and Dakota Miller (145) of Cardinal both lost in the second round and finished third in their weight classes. Cardinal will travel to Eddyville for sectionals on Saturday.
Multiple Pekin wrestlers were hampered by the flu, but Pekin coach Al Chapman believes that even his healthy wrestlers underperformed Saturday.
“Our performance on the mat was not up to our potential,” Chapman said. “We need to go into the post season with the attitude that everyone has a record of 0-0 and that anything can happen no matter what has taken place throughout the season.”
Chance Searcy (132) earned a third place finish. Senior Trenton Conger (220) went 2-2 on the day and finished in fourth place.
Van Buren’s Jessie Fuller (152) and Mitch Garrels (195) both earned third place finishes.
