Trampolinists place at state contest
PELLA — All 13 of Fairfield’s youth trampolinists qualified for nationals Saturday at the USTA Iowa State Championships in Pella.
Four members of the Fairfield Park and Recreation team leaped their way to first-place status and were named state champions in their respective events. Juliette Pohren finished first in the 8-and-under sub-advanced girls division with a score of 17.0, and Olivia McClaran won the 10-year-old novice girls division tallying a 17.3. Bryanna Popejoy was first among 11-and-over beginner girls with a score of 17.2, while Justin Simmering scored 12.4 to finish first in the intermediate boys division.
McClaran’s first-place finish was especially impressive because it represented a win against 19 other competitors in her event and age group.
Other members of the team included Kiara Bickham (first place in her flight, fourth in age group), Michelle Zhang (second place), Madalyn Rauscher (fourth), Taryn Scheuermann (fourth), Kristin Burnstedt (fourth), Ashlyn Elmore (fifth), Maggie Ferrel (fifth), Ella Pollet (sixth) and Gracey Simmering (ninth).
All of the competitors received trophies as well as “boarding passes” entitling them to compete in the National Championship USTA meet in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., beginning June 18.
Under the leadership of Jeff and Jeanne Ide of Brighton, the local team has just completed its first year as a competitive group. Jeff remarked that he is very satisfied with the progress the team has made this year and looks forward to expanding the program when the new Fairfield gym is built.
