Trojan 2017 track and field season starts today
The Fairfield Trojan girls’ track and field team begins its 2017 season today, 4 p.m., at Mount Vernon in a 25-team meet.
“Practices have been great so far,” said Trojan head coach Jerrod Belzer. “We’ve been very blessed to have the weather that we’ve had so it’s been nice to be outside. Rarely are we jumping, throwing, hurdling and sprinting outside so early in the season. The girls are enjoying it and have all been working hard.”
Today’s meet will take place indoors on the campus of Cornell College.
“The expectation for today is just to go out and compete a little bit,” Belzer said. “It’s always a little nerve-wracking to get back on the track for the first time. So these indoor meets are nice to get back in the flow of competing and get some nerves out of the way before outdoor season.”
The Trojans will be putting some of their state qualifiers on the track today.
“Malory Jones will be in the high jump,” Belzer said. “Aluna Olaniyi was a qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles and she’ll compete in the 60-meter hurdles tonight.
“Ashley Bloomquist qualified in the 1,500 last season and was a State XC qualifier.
“Also, our 4x800, distance medley and 4x400 squads all competed at State last year. It’s exciting from a coaching standpoint to see where they’re at — it will be fun to watch them compete tonight.”
