Trojan Sports Boosters president Chad Thompson, left, accepts a $7,000 donation from Dave and Madonna Smithburg, representing Smithburg’s BP in Fairfield and Jet Gas Corporation, a BP Branded Marketer servicing BP stations throughout southeast Iowa. In addition to the $3,500 BP Fueling Communities grant donation, Smithburg’s and Jet Gas Corporation donated an additional $3,500, bringing the total to $7,000. The contribution was well timed as the boosters were trying to meet a fundraising challenge set up through the estate of Bill Strawhacker, a longtime booster president and board member. In addition to an outright bequest to the boosters, his estate offered a $25,000 match, if the group could raise at least that much money through special events and contributions. The grant helped the boosters achieve the goal. “We were compelled to support this great organization that we hold close to our heart, in order to give back to the community and thank our many customers for their support over the years,” said Dave Smithburg, owner Smithburg Automotive. “Jet Gas Corporation wants to help meet the needs of those in our community and appreciates the role local businesses play in maintaining our community’s way of life,” said Larry Bentler, president of Jet Gas Corporation.
