WASHINGTON, Iowa — The Fairfield bowling teams kicked off the postseason Saturday with the Southeast Conference meet at Melody Lanes in Washington.

The Trojan boys finished in second place behind Keokuk with a score of 2667, and the girls’ team came in third ahead of Washington with a final tally of 2185. Keokuk claimed both conference titles, scoring 2736 in boys’ competition and 2516 in the girls’ meet.

Fairfield seniors Gabe Hull and Alyssa Chatfield earned first team all-conference spots while leading their respective squads.

In boys’ competition, the Trojans had an uncharacteristically slow first round as only two of 12 games eclipsed 200. Fairfield’s first round score was the lowest among the boys’ teams at 1677, while Keokuk took an early lead with a first round score of 1833.

“The boys just dug themselves too big of a hole during round one,” coach Bryan Marlay said.

The Trojans rallied back in the baker round with a high score of 990, yet Keokuk held off the charge with its own solid round two of 903.

Joining Gabe Hull (393) on the all-conference squad was senior teammate Brady Hammes, who placed on the second team with a 361 series score.

Sophomore Cody Craff (327), senior Ben Hull (315) and sophomore Andrew Chatfield (281) also scored in the first round for Fairfield. Lead-off bowler Mitch Goudy posted a score of 270 to round out the squad.

In girls’ action, Chatfield had the second highest series of the day with a 372, and senior Megan Harris (343) and freshman Madelyn Swan (315) filed in behind to earn spots on the second team all-conference squad.

“It was good to have three of our six bowlers score above a 300 two-game series,” said coach Lisa Greenig.

Fairfield’s Jenna Nelson scored with a 239 series, and Kristen Terrell bowled a 222 series on her 18th birthday. Tracy Andermann posted an alternate score of 215.

The Trojan bowling squads will be competing against five other teams at the district level Thursday in Mount Pleasant. Doors open at noon, and bowling will commence at 1 p.m.
