Trojan girls settle for sixth place Tuesday

Apr 10, 2013

FORT MADISON — Junior Marisa Repp won the high jump and senior Sidney Baumann placed second in the discus throw Tuesday for the Fairfield girls at the always difficult Timm Lamb Pen City Relays in Fort Madison.

Repp tied a personal high mark on her way to the Trojans’ only win, clearing the bar at 5-feet, 1-inch to top a field of eight other jumpers. Baumann, meanwhile, set a season-best of 115-feet, 5-inches in the discus to contribute to the Trojans’ quick start at the 38th annual meet.

The Trojans, who were without star sprinter Sydney Howard, didn’t find as much success on the track and settled for sixth place in the eight-team Class A Division. The Trojans accumulated 36 points on the day to top Southeast Conference rivals Fort Madison (20) and Keokuk (3).

Iowa City West won the Bloodhound-hosted meet with a whopping 147.5 points, Cedar Rapids Jefferson came in second with 120 and Mount Pleasant scored 82.5 to claim third.

“The competition was terrific. Great sprinters on Jefferson and an overall balanced team in Iowa City West,” said Fairfield head coach Ron Hunerdosse. “It’s always tough to get points down there, and it’s hard to get a rhythm down there because of those two schools.”

Repp also turned in one of Fairfield’s best performances on the track with a fifth-place time of 1:11.88 in the 400-meter hurdles. Other fifth-place individual finishes came from freshman Taylor Ferrel in the 400-dash (1:07.69) as well as sophomore Alexis Ring in the 100-meter hurdles (17.64). Senior Jessica Lamb was clocked at 2:41.17 in the open-800 to finish fifth overall.

The Trojans finished fourth in a pair of relays, including their 4x200 team of McKenzie McClure, Gabrielle Kuehl, Cierra Bielinski and Mackenzi Harwood (1:56.90); and Repp, Lamb, Hannah Sobaski and Abby Melcher in the 4x400 (4:32.11) to finish the meet.

Despite finishing fifth in the 4x800 relay, Fairfield knocked seven seconds off last Thursday’s winning time. Sobaski, Lamb, Ferrel and Sesali Martin teamed up to finish the race in 10:28.

In JV action, Martin finished second in the 400-meter dash with a run of 1:09.72.

Fairfield travels to the Rocket Relays at Eddyville-Blakesburg on Thursday.
