Trojan girls' track picks up one win in Pella
PELLA — Fairfield picked up one victory Thursday at the Pekin Indoor in Pella, and head coach Ron Hunerdosse lauded who he called his team’s “usual suspects.”
The lone win came in the 4x200 relay, where Mackenzie McClure, Sydney Howard, Marisa Repp and Cierra Bielinski topped the field with a 1:54.52 time. Howard anchored the team to victory, as Fairfield nipped second-place Ottumwa by nearly three-tenths of a second.
“What you see from Howard you come to expect. She’s a horse for us, and she’s a good one,” Hunerdosse said.
Howard, the returning state champion in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, was one of those “usual suspects.” McClure, Repp, Jessica Lamb and Hannah Sobaski were others, leading Fairfield to runner-up finishes in two additional relays and third in another.
The 55-meter shuttle relay team of McClure, Bielinski, Emma Kuehl and Howard took home silver with a time of 31.04; and Taylor Ferrel, Lamb, Howard and Repp ran to a second-place finish in the 4x400 (4:30.38). Ferrel, Lamb, Sesali Martin and Sobaski also finished third in the 4x800, clocking in at 10:49.
The Trojans also received a fourth-place finish from the shuttle hurdle relay, which featured Alexis Ring, Molly Ryan, Grace Smith and Repp. The quartet combined for a time of 43.58 seconds.
In addition to the “usual suspects,” rookies Abby Melcher and Ferrel impressed Hunerdosse.
“Their times right now are not indicative of what they’re doing. Those two are not afraid when they get on the track, and have matured with how they run their races. They haven’t reaped the rewards yet, but they will eventually.”
In JV action, Fairfield’s 4x400 crew won its race, finishing 18 seconds behind the varsity quartet. Sobaski, Bielinski, Martin and Alyssa Fitch ran the event in 4:48.56.
Hunerdosse said the indoor meet was a good opportunity to showcase the team’s young talent.
“It gets a lot of kids involved, and I personally like being able to do that early in the year,” said the head man. “It’s also a good chance to see some kids and teams you don’t normally see.”
Fairfield continues the indoor season Monday at the Dickinson Relays on the University of Northern Iowa campus in Cedar Falls. Hunerdosse said he plans to take eight runners to the meet.
