Trojan golfers bounce back in Washington
After having a rough tournament in Ames earlier in the week, the Fairfield boys’ golf team bounced back to defeat Washington and Keokuk Thursday in Washington.
The Trojans scored 153 in the triangular, while the Demons came in with 168 and the Chiefs scored 183.
“It was a great comeback after the wind debacle at Ames,” Fairfield coach Mick Flattery said. “This was very good prep going into Tuesday’s conference meet, [which is] back there. We learned a lot of things on how to play the course a little better.”
Matt Carr knocked in two birdies and led the Trojans with a 37 on the day. Nick Higgins finished his day with a 38, as did Joe Hietpas. Landon Gamrath made one birdie and finished with a 40. Alex Shier, back in the lineup after missing the meet in Ames will an illness, shot a 41. Dillon Shelby shot a 42.
“It was good to see Dillon bounce back after struggling in the wind at Ames,” Flattery said.
Fairfield (44-6) will play Saturday in the Chariton Invitational before competing in the Southeast Conference meet Tuesday.
