The Trojans can now call themselves back-to-back champions.

By shooting a 316 as a team Tuesday in Washington, the Fairfield boys’ golf team was crowned Southeast Conference champions for the second year in a row.

“It wasn’t pretty or perfect today, but the guys scrambled and were grinding the entire round,” Fairfield coach Mick Flattery said.

Nick Higgins, now the fourth ranked golfer in the state in Class 3A, led Fairfield by shooting a 76 on the day. He initially tied Ryan Waite of Washington and Kiley Miller of Mt. Pleasant, resulting in a three-way playoff. Waite was eliminated on the first hole and finished third. Miller would get first place after getting the best of Higgins on the fifth playoff hole.

“A five-hole playoff has not happened for some time,” Flattery said. “It’s pretty cool however. The guys get a little taste of what the [professionals] do on the PGA Tour when they play sudden death.”

Alex Shier got fourth overall by shooting a 78. Shier, along with the three players in front of him and the two behind him, were given All-Conference honors. Joe Hietpas lost in a playoff hole to Keokuk’s Bryce Miller for sixth place, resulting in Fairfield just narrowly missing out on getting three players in the top six. Hietpas shot an 80 on the day.

Matt Carr shot an 82 and Landon Gamrath finished with an 85. Both players knocked in one birdie. Dillon Shelby rounded out Fairfield’s lineup with a 101.

Fairfield is now ranked No. 4 is the state, behind Pella, West Delaware and Creston. In addition to Higgins being at the four shot, Hietpas (19), Gamrath (20) and Carr (28) were each ranked in the top 30.

The Trojans (51-10) will enter the postseason Friday with the sectional tournament, which will be played at The Preserve at Lake Rathbun in Moravia. Conference foes Mt. Pleasant, Keokuk and Fort Madison will be present there, along with Chariton, Oskaloosa, Davis County and Centerville.

The top two teams and the four individuals with the lowest scores will advance to district play next Friday at Stone Creek Golf Course in Williamsburg.
