Trojan softball crushes Columbus Junction
A seven-run second inning put the Fairfield softball team on the path to its ninth straight victory Friday at Columbus Junction.
The Trojans dispensed of the Wildcats 14-1. Columbus Junction (6-14) scored its only run in the fifth inning. That made the score 10-1, which kept Fairfield from winning the game in by the 10-run rule. Instead, the Trojans would tack on four more runs and end the game in the sixth.
Alli Deao started on the mound and went four innings. Deao did not allow a hit and struck out five batters. The start lowered her season ERA to 1.80. Haley Beard pitched the last two innings.
Cleanup hitter Mackenzie McClure had another stellar game. McClure went 3-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. She now leads the Trojans with 20 RBIs, 28 hits and is batting .452 on the year.
Ninth place hitter Kaylee Watson went 4-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Karley Williams slapped two hits and scored twice. Sydney Burnett scored three times from the leadoff spot.
Class 4A No. 9 Fairfield (16-4, 7-1 SEC) will travel to Washington tonight for a Southeast Conference doubleheader. In three games against the Demons (8-12) this season, Fairfield is 3-0 and has outscored Washington by 15 runs.
