Courtesy of: Chris Faulkner/Fort Madison Daily Democrat Fairfield’s Bryce Lunsford has a strong hold on Fort Madison’s Lane Gray in the 160-pound match on Thursday in Fort Madison.

Bryce Lunsford began the comeback but it was too late for the Trojans to recover.

Lunsford (160) was given a tough match against Fort Madison’s Lane Gray. Gray started strong, but by the end Lunsford was dominating the match and won by a major decision. The dual started with the 120-weight class, and up to that point no Trojan had won. The Bloodhounds gaining an early lead is the reason they defeated the Fairfield wrestling team 54-26 Thursday in Fort Madison.

“We started out slow,” Fairfield coach Steve Miller said. “[Fort Madison’s] really strong in the lighter weights. I’m proud of the older kids on the team who changed the momentum to our direction.”

Four straight matches went Fairfield’s way after Lunsford’s victory. Austin Francisco won by major decision, then Michael Fritz, Maxwell Spalla and Brett Scott all won by pinning their opponent. Miller was particularly impressed with Spalla’s victory.

“Max had a chance to win his match just by staying off his opponent’s back,” Miller said. “I don’t think they thought some of our guys would win like they did. We gave them more than they expected.”

Fritz, a freshman, earned his win over a senior. Scott’s victory gave him his 19th victory on the season.

Miller was pleased with his team’s attitude and effort, but he still thinks the Trojans need an improved confidence if they wish to win Southeast Conference matches against teams like the Bloodhounds.

“We have technique things to work on but what I’m really trying to instill is a winning attitude,” Miller said. “We need to get the right frame of mind first. If we do that, the wins will come.”
