Trojans open bowling season in Keokuk

Dec 11, 2012

KEOKUK — The Fairfield bowling team opened its season Monday against Keokuk at Arrowhead Bowl.

The Trojans dropped both varsity matches, falling 2922-2643 on the boys’ side and 2306-1951 in the girls’ match.

Keokuk, the defending Class 1A state champs in girls bowling, showed little sign of rust. Led by Hannah Seyb’s series score of 385 and Lakyn Boltz’s 362, the Chiefs built a 1610-1245 lead after round one. The Trojans did outscore Keokuk in three out of five games in Baker competition, however, and won the second round 706-696.

Fairfield was led by freshman Madelyn Swan’s 267 series. Sophomore Tracy Andermann was second on the team with a 259 series and senior Megan Harris had a 255. Nicci Mellot (246) and Kristen Terrell (218) rounded out the team score.

“The girls had a good outing by bowling close to their practice averages,” said Fairfield head coach Lisa Greenig.

In the boys’ varsity match, Keokuk led 1968-1709 after the first round and added 20 pins onto their lead in Baker competition, outscoring Fairfield 954-934.

The Trojans’ Andrew Chatfield picked up where he left off last season, leading the Trojans with a 213 game and 385 series. Brady Hammes performed well in his first varsity match, bowling a 383 series, and Gabe Hull scored a 323. Cody Craff (318) and Ben Hull (300) also scored for Fairfield.

Keokuk was led by Cole Hemann’s series score of 471.

Greenig said the Trojan boys had some trouble adjusting and converting spares.

“Our bowlers will be working on ‘zone shooting’ and converting spares. Today’s match was evidence to the importance of converting spares,” said Greenig.

Meanwhile, the JV boys came away with a 93-pin win, besting Keokuk 2143-2050. The JV Trojans led by 40 pins after round one and built onto their lead with a Baker round of 697.

Chet Vogt was Fairfield’s top performer with a 330 series, and Jake Kessel was close behind with a 327 series and team-high game of 188. Other JV teammates also bowled near or above their practice averages.

There was no JV competition on the girls’ side.

The Trojans have their home opener Saturday vs. Mount Pleasant. Start time is 1:30 p.m. at Flamingo Lanes in Fairfield.
