Trojans open up Friday with Mustangs

Fairfield defense hopes to contain Utt

Fairfield played what was likely its cleanest game of the 2013 season when Davis County paid a visit.

Senior quarterback Jordan Whitney went 18-19 through the air, with 211 yards passing and three touchdowns. The Trojans were stellar defensively, allowing just 74 yards passing while limiting the effectiveness of the Mustang running game. Nick Jackson ran for 85 yards on the ground for Fairfield, which picked up the victory by the score of 34-7.

Head coach Mike Schenck and his staff hope to kick off the 2014 season with another win over the Mustangs, who are seeking to make the playoffs for the seventh-straight season.

The Trojans could make a bit of history themselves when it comes to postseason play. A state playoff berth would mark the seventh time in eight years Fairfield has reached the postseason. The journey begins for both teams Friday in Bloomfield.

“Our passing game really clicked and we played one of our better games of the season,” Schenck said. “Davis County has a strong offensive and defensive line, so I expect them to be tough on us again.”

Fairfield fans will get their first official look at the Trojans’ newly constructed defense. Six players, including all four defensive linemen, are offensive starters as well. Michael Fritz, Dillan Carlson, Bryce Lunsford and Cody Craff, each of which are at least 6-feet tall and weigh 200 pounds (Craff tips the scales at 330), will start on the line. Two-way starters Jordan Reid (cornerback) and Dakota Nye (strong safety) will be joined in the secondary by senior LaQuan Hill at corner back and senior Zane Richmond at free safety.

No matter who starts, expect plenty of players to get time on the field as the coaching staff continues to seek what works best. Starting linebacker Fejon Redd, who is being joined by Alex Christensen and Zach Martin in the middle of the Trojan defense, will likely see carries on offense as well.

The defense will be in charge of stopping quarterback Justin Utt, a two-year starter. Utt passed for over 1,000 yards last year, but could only muster 74 yards and was picked off once against the Trojans. A dual-threat, Utt will lead the Mustang offense with running back Jacob Jones and wide receiver Dayton Lynch. Jones ran for 89 yards against Fairfield in 2013, while Lynch will be getting his first significant playing time offensively. All three offense weapons start on defense too.

Offensively, Fairfield dual-threat sophomore quarterback Cameron Baumann will lead a diverse attack that could take many forms.

“I believe Davis County’s strength is their defensive line; they are big and physical,” Fairfield offensive coordinator Matt Schenck said. “We need to keep them honest up the middle and try to attack the edges on them. We want to make it a game of our athletes versus their athletes.”

Team captain Conner Davidson, who had 60 tackles in 2014, will anchor the Mustang defensive line with fellow senior Mac Chilton. Baumann and Nye will be Fairfield’s main rushing weapons and will likely have the speed on the edge to gain positive yardage.

It may only be week one, but an early win could mean plenty to both squads. Davis County still has to face PCM, Albia and Centerville this season, each of which made the playoffs last year. Road trips to Clarke and Chariton, along with a visit from Keokuk, could make for a tough year for the Mustangs. As for Fairfield, the Trojans have an early season test against powerful Albia coming next week before hosting Knoxville.
