Trojans run in Washington

WASHINGTON, Iowa – The Trojan cross-country teams competed at the Demon Relays in Washington Tuesday afternoon.

The girls’ nemesis, Fort Madison, won the meet with 27 points to Fairfield’s 58. The boys came in fourth place, narrowly missing a bronze medal as they finished with 78 points to third-place Sigourney’s 74. Fort Madison won the boys’ side with 33 points.

Gannon Courtright earned one of the top spots on the leaderboard as he finished the 5 kilometer race in 18:23, good for fifth place. Darren Roberts finished just before Mark Diers, as the junior Roberts crossed the line at 19:13 while the sophomore Diers stopped the clock at 19:27.

Fairfield’s other runners were: Bryan Wilkins, 18th, 19:43; Elijah Parr, 28th, 20:28; Dalton Dippey, 33rd, 21:04; Jordan Towns, 35th, 21:19; Michael Holt, 37th, 21:21; Connor Ryan, 40th, 21:36; Caleb Heisel, 41st, 21:56; Shane Morrissey, 42nd, 21:57; Charles Heisel, 49th, 22:37; Jonah Cooper, 50th, 22:39; Carter Spalla, 54th, 23:26; David Burnett, 65th, 24:57.

Neither of the races for the top spot were particularly close. Fort Madison’s Aaron Steffensmeier broke the tape in 16:35, a full 78 seconds before Turner Klein of Keota.

In the girls’ race, Fort Madison’s Sierra Howardson stopped the watches at 19:07, 55 seconds ahead of her teammate Brett Schneider. The Trojans’ Ashley Bloomquist was a close third as she came in at 20:11. Ashlyn Elmore earned six points for the Trojans and crossed the line at 21:44.

Also running for Fairfield were: Maggie Ferrel, eighth, 22:24; Hailey Pohren-Gevock, 20th, 24:09; Shannon Morrissey, 21st, 24:39; Anuja Pharasi, 25th, 25:17; Ella Pollet, 27th, 25:29; Amiah Neff, 31st, 26:17; Savannah Kelley, 33rd, 26:19; Kylee Marlay, 40th, 27:05; Emily Hanna, 41st, 27:06; Katrina Cecchini, 45th, 29:39.

 

Middle school

Seventy-one boys and 60 girls ran in the middle school’s two-mile race in Washington. Alex Forrest was the top finishing boy as he completed his run in 11:57, good for the silver medal. The other boys were: Jakob Watson, 12th, 12:37; Blake Holden, 13th, 12:38; Isaac Rosales, 17th, 12:54; River Patterson, 25th, 13:31; Kevin Kretz, 30th, 13:46; and Brecken Courtright, 31st, 13:48.

Yana Gaskell was the Trojans’ lead representative on the girls’ side as she ran the course in 12:53 for third place. The others girls were: Autumn Lisk, 25th, 15:04; Delaney Breen, 27th, 15:12; Nellie Higdon, 43rd, 17:02; and Samara McLain, 47th, 17:36.
