Trojans sweep Panthers in SEC doubleheader
Perfect placement was all it took to give Fairfield the lead in game one of its softball doubleheader Tuesday against Mt. Pleasant at Fairfield Middle School.
This Southeast Conference doubleheader belonged to the Trojans (13-4, 7-1 SEC), who won game one 12-0 and game two 9-3. Fairfield didn’t waste time getting on the scoreboard, either.
Up second in the first inning, freshman Kenady Waugh laid down a bunt that rolled perfectly into a triangle of open space on the right side of infield, resulting in an easy hit. Brynna Bowman did the same thing in the next at bat, except to the left side. Soon after, the Trojans had scored two runs and had the bases loaded. The ball had never left the infield.
Thanks to a Marisa Repp two RBI single up the middle and a Madison Roberts sacrifice fly, Fairfield led 7-0 after the first inning.
“Games like this when you play a team that has been struggling a bit for wins, what you want to do is get ahead early,” Fairfield coach Bob Bradfield said. “Even in the second game, they took the lead, but then we scored five runs and really slowed their momentum.”
The first game lasted four innings. The Panthers managed just three hits off pitcher Alli Deao, which all came in the fourth inning.
“We didn’t seem like we came ready to play and didn’t swing the bats like we’re supposed to,” said Mt. Pleasant coach Troy Mears. “Then they caught us with a couple errors in the first inning and it was tough to battle back from that.”
Julie Lasswell, Cali Liechty and Morgan Fraise each got into the hit column for the Panthers. As for Fairfield, Repp went 2-2 with a double and three RBIs. Sydney Burnett, Waugh and Bowman each had two hits.
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game two, only to see that lead fall apart in the bottom of the first with five Trojan runs. The Panthers chipped away at their deficit until it stood at 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
“We hadn’t been blown out all year, so I said let’s change it this game,” Mears said. “They battled and performed better the second game.”
Fairfield would score four runs in the fifth to make it 9-3, and the score didn’t change the rest of the way. Haley Beard pitched four innings, allowing seven hits, four walks and two earned runs, before Bradfield brought in Deao to close it out.
“Haley had a little trouble with control and walked some people,” Bradfield said. “[The Panthers] adjusted at the plate and got some hits in game two.”
The bottom of the order came through for Fairfield. Sara Trent and Kaylee Watson, who batted eighth and ninth in the order, came through with three hits and four RBIs in game two.
Mt. Pleasant (7-11, 1-6 SEC) will play a Southeast Conference opponent again Thursday in the form of Keokuk. The Trojans were pleased to improve their conference record yet again.
“It feels really good,” Williams said. “We came in with confidence and we left with it too.”
Fairfield is scheduled to host Albia tonight at Fairfield Middle School.
