Trojans third at Oskaloosa InvitePella Dutch win tournament
For the first time this season, the Fairfield boys’ golf team did not end the day with a number one placed next to them on the scorecard.
The Trojans finished third at the Oskaloosa Invitational Tuesday with the score of 325. Pella won the tournament by shooting a 307, while Mt. Pleasant shot a 323 to finish just two strokes ahead of Fairfield. Winterset, Washington and Oskaloosa rounded out the field.
Four Pella players shot in the 70s and led the Dutch to the tournament win. The tournament was cold and wet, leading to a damp and slick-playing surface. Fairfield had practiced shooting nine holes in that brand of weather, but not a full 18.
“It really tests your mental toughness and paying attention to detail on every shot,” Fairfield coach Mick Flattery said. “No excuses from us because everyone played in the same conditions. It shows us what we need to work on.”
Nick Higgins led the Trojans by shooting a 76. Higgins made two birdies and played the par-5 holes even, and as a result he placed third overall. Senior Landon Gamrath shot a 43 through his first nine holes, but played an excellent back nine to finish with an 82 on the day. Senior teammates Matt Carr (83), Alex Shier (84) and Joe Hietpas (84) were right behind him. Dillon Shelby shot a 90 to round out Fairfield’s varsity squad.
Flattery’s club is currently ranked second in Iowa in Class 3A. Decorah owns the top spot, with Pella, Creston and West Delaware rounding out the top five. Higgins is the No. 6 golfer in 3A, and Gamrath is currently perched at No. 18. Hietpas and Carr also are ranked in the top 25.
Fairfield (16-2) will shoot for a tournament victory Thursday at The Preserve at Lake Rathbun, which is near Moravia. This is an 18-team tournament.
