Van Buren advances to baseball finalThe Warriors will play Newman Catholic in title game
The Van Buren baseball team’s run towards a state championship will continue into this weekend. Yesterday the Warriors beat Van Meter 14-4. Van Meter committed eight errors in the game, and as every baseball fan knows, winning and errors don’t mix.
After the second inning of play Van Buren was already up 10-0. Brandon Plecker and Garrett Saunders both had singles in the first inning that contributed to the rally. A dropped infield pop fly certainly didn’t help out Van Meter.
Thomas Fitzsimmons got the win for Van Buren after pitching four plus innings and only giving up four hits. Robby Laughlin pitched the last two innings without giving up a run.
Robert Barker and Tanner Smith both had three RBIs for the winning squad.
Van Meter’s Ben Engstrand and Drake Doud both had two hits. The entire rest of the team could only muster one.
Van Buren will play the Newman Catholic Knights, out of Mason City, Iowa, in the championship game. Newman is advancing to the title game after beating Twin Cedars on Thursday by the score of 3-0. Newman is in the state tournament for the 17th time and for the 11th time in the last 13 years. They won titles in 1998, 2002, and 2009. The Knights were runners-up last season. The game will be played at Principal Park in Des Moines at noon tomorrow.
