Van Buren boys' track opens season
KEOSAUQUA — The Van Buren boys’ track and field team kicked off the outdoor season Thursday with an impressive second-place finish on its home track.
Competing against five other teams in Class A competition, the Warriors racked up 134 points to finish behind winner Highland’s 164. Third-place Danville finished well behind Van Buren with a score of 91.
Brayden Starnes picked up the lone win for Van Buren in the open-800. Starnes finished the race in 2:16.21 and more than five seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
The Warriors also received second-place finishes in eight other events, including four individual contests. Garrett Saunders kicked off the meet finishing second in the long jump (17’ 3”). Seth Dickinson took second place in the 3200 with a time of 11:32, and long distance teammate Thomas Fitzsimmons was second in the 1600 at 5:12. Jordan Baker clocked a runner-up time of 2:21.81 in the 800.
Saunders, Fitzsimmons, Starnes and Wyatt Cole earned a second-place finish in the 4x800 (9:12); and Starnes, Saunders, Jacob Heisel and Vaughn Helling combined forces to finish second in the 4x200 relay (1:47). Van Buren’s 4x100 relay team of Heisel, Helling, Aaron Clemens and Colton Horn finished second (50.16), as did the medley team made up of Clemens, Cole, Jesse Fuller and Sheldon DeWitt (4:18).
Van Buren will be back in action April 9 at Davis County.
