Van Buren falls in regional quarterfinal
PELLA — For the second time in three seasons, head coach Matt Zeitler and the Van Buren girls’ basketball team saw their season come to an end at the hand of Pella Christian on Tuesday.
The Warrior girls fell to the host Eagles 51-33 in the Class 2A Region 6 quarterfinal round in Pella.
Van Buren’s Hanna Haynes ended her prep career with an expected packed stat line, including 17 points, 12 boards and three blocked shots. Sophomore teammate Kaitlyn Johnson scored eight points off two 3s, and senior Payten Hughes tallied four points and five rebounds. Senior Jordan Billups also scored four.
The Warriors, who conclude their season with an overall record of 17-6, trailed by double digits early but rallied back in the second quarter to pull within two, 26-24.
The Warriors were unable to hit a majority of their shots the rest of the way, however, and the host Eagles pulled away in the fourth quarter.
