Van Buren falls to 3-3 with loss at Highland
The Warriors could not find a way to score enough points Friday when they traveled to Highland Riverside.
Quarterback Garrett Saunders was stymied by the Huskies defense, managing only two yards on the ground. Highland went on to win 22-8.
The Warriors scored in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Saunders to Casey Jones. Saunders ran in the 2-point conversion, putting the score at 14-8.
The Huskies would tack on another touchdown late in quarter.
“The Warrior defense did a good job until the 4th quarter,” Van Buren head coach Mike Hurley said. “[Van Buren] just ran out of gas against a pumped up Highland team.”
Jones led the team in tackles with 12. Mitch Garrells and Dakota Larue each recorded seven. Brayden Starnes recovered Highland’s only fumble.
Offensively, Aaron Clemens led the Warriors in rushing with 66 yards. Vaughn Helling contributed to the rushing attack with 46 yards. Brandon Plecker led Van Buren in receptions with five catches that went for 76 yards. Saunders threw for 155 yards.
Van Buren (3-3) travels to Lone Tree for another district game Friday.
